A Christmas visit combines ordinary travel with gifts, family meals and somebody else’s household routine. Start by agreeing on arrival and departure dates, sleeping arrangements and who will collect you. Ask what your hosts already have, especially towels, bedding and equipment for younger children. A short conversation can remove bulky luggage and prevent an unexpected shopping trip after arrival.
This checklist uses a 3–5 night visit as its starting point. Clothing quantities assume you can rewear outer layers; change the underwear allowance if there is no laundry. Snacks cover the outward journey, rather than meals for the whole stay. Buy only missing supplies. Put belongings under Take along and assign the To do checks to named adults so that tickets, gifts and children’s bags do not all fall to the same person.
For Christmas 2026, build the journey around the actual transport service and your family’s celebration time. Treat outward travel, local transfers and the return trip as separate checks. Keep the bag needed during a delay within reach, and leave some room for presents received at the destination. The November–December season window indicates preparation time; it does not predict weather or guarantee that transport will run.
Who this list is for
A family of 2 adults and 2 children visiting relatives for 3–5 nights around Christmas, by train, plane or car, within or between the US, Great Britain and EU countries. Adapt the list for your route, children’s ages and your hosts’ home.
Tips
Coordinate the visit before filling the suitcase
Tell your hosts about allergies, bedtime routines and any access needs. Agree whether you are bringing a dish, helping with shopping or choosing a small household gift. Ask about available laundry and sleeping space. If you arrive late, agree how to enter the home and what the children can eat without requiring your hosts to prepare another meal.
Make gifts easy to inspect
TSA’s holiday guidance recommends gift bags or boxes that can be opened for inspection; sealed wrapping may need to be removed. Pack wrapping separately or finish it after arrival. This is US screening advice, not permission to carry every gift. Check the actual contents, including liquids, batteries and sharp objects, against your airport and airline rules.
Check liquids at each airport
For UK departures, GOV.UK says liquid rules depend on the airport; most use a 100 ml container limit, while some allow larger containers. Jam, honey and toiletries can count as liquids. Check departure, connection and return airports individually, including applicable exemptions for medicines or baby food. Buying a gift after security does not settle the rules for the next security check.
Check the border before offering a food gift
A favourite cheese or sausage is not automatically a suitable international gift. Great Britain currently restricts most meat and all dairy from the listed European origins; Northern Ireland has separate rules. Entry into the EU from outside it generally prohibits meat and milk products, with specified exceptions. Read the guidance for the product and origin, including the return journey. If uncertain, arrange the food locally with your hosts.
Declare agricultural items when entering the US
APHIS says travellers entering the US must declare agricultural and wildlife products, and recommends retaining original packaging and receipts showing origin. Inspectors decide whether an item can enter. Check food gifts and snacks as well as obvious plants or seeds. Packaging or a small personal quantity does not itself establish permission; choose a different gift if you cannot verify the requirements.
Keep charging equipment accessible
Pack cables that actually fit your devices and test the chargers before departure. Under US FAA rules, spare lithium batteries and power banks belong in the cabin, with protection against damage and short circuits; airline rules can be stricter. British Airways also requires these items in hand baggage. Check your own carrier’s capacity, quantity and use restrictions, and remove the power bank if a cabin bag is checked at the gate.
Plan a delay and the journey home
Check the whole route on the operator’s website, not just the main train or flight. National Rail’s 2026/27 Christmas advice warns of timetable changes and engineering work, with no National Rail service on Christmas Day. That example applies to its British network. For every destination, recheck your actual dates, onward transfers and return connections, then agree with your hosts what happens if arrival or departure slips.

Questions and answers
How much clothing should a family take?
For the suggested 3–5 nights, begin with 2 everyday outfits per person, underwear and socks for each day, and an extra child’s outfit accessible during travel. Add a chosen celebration outfit only if needed. These are packing suggestions, not transport allowances. Adjust for laundry, activities and the forecast for your actual destination.
Can we take homemade Christmas food across a border?
Check the recipe’s ingredients, origin and destination rules before making it. Food accepted at airport security may still be prohibited at the border. The Great Britain and EU rules linked here address animal products, with different exceptions. When the answer is unclear, offer to buy ingredients or help cook after arrival instead.
What belongs in the bag we keep with us?
Keep required identity documents, tickets, essential medicines, charging cables, contact details, a child’s change of clothes and suitable snacks together. Follow the carrier’s rules for batteries and liquids. Each adult should know where the bag is and be able to find the next connection without relying on the other adult’s unlocked phone.
How can we avoid a difficult departure after Christmas?
Agree the return date and transfer with your hosts before travelling. Recheck the operator’s timetable, including the final local leg, and keep home keys accessible. Leave space for new gifts and verify restrictions again for food brought home. If a delay would affect work, school or care arrangements, decide whom to contact and what alternative you could realistically use.
