Organise your fridge

A practical fridge reset: find food that needs using, keep raw foods separate and turn your inventory into a smaller shopping list.

Checklist items: 8

Organise your fridge

The checklist

  • Check temperature and appliance instructions
  • Check one shelf at a time
  • Read dates and storage instructions

+ 5 more explained items

Start with the food you already own. A tidy shelf helps only when you can see what is in it and decide how it will become a meal. This reset gives each item a next action: use soon, store correctly, freeze while suitable, or discard when unsafe. It does not ask you to buy new organisers.

Work one shelf at a time so chilled food does not sit out while you clean the whole appliance. Keep the original packaging when it carries handling instructions. A homemade date label records what you did; it cannot extend a product’s safe life.

Finish by choosing meals from your inventory. Write only the missing ingredients on the shopping list, with quantities that match the people eating at home. Keep the checklist as a repeatable household routine. Each person can mark their task and add a note about something that needs using.

Who this list is for

Households that want to waste less food without buying a matching set of storage boxes.

Tips

  1. Give urgent food a visible place

Put suitable ready-to-eat foods needing attention together where you will notice them. Keep raw meat elsewhere. Look here before deciding what to cook, and move items back if the arrangement interferes with safe storage.

  2. Keep storage decisions specific

Follow the packaging and your appliance instructions. Separate raw meat, poultry and fish in a leakproof container below ready-to-eat foods. An attractive shelf arrangement is not a reason to ignore these boundaries.

  3. Check temperature rather than appearance

EPA recommends a refrigerator temperature of 40°F or below, approximately 4°C. Check the appliance setting and a suitable thermometer. A cold-feeling shelf is not a reliable measurement, particularly after restocking.

  4. Freeze with a plan

Freeze suitable food before it becomes unsafe, in portions your household will actually use. Write the contents and freezing date. Leave a reminder in the list so a frozen meal is included in a later plan.

  5. Buy the gap in the meal plan

Count the meals you will eat at home before shopping. Check the freezer and cupboard as well as the fridge. Promotions help only if the extra quantity will be used; an unfinished plan is a useful reason to buy less.

To do

Before the next shopping tripReset the fridge

  • Check temperature and appliance instructions — Aim for 40°F or below, approximately 4°C, following the appliance guidance.
  • Check one shelf at a time — Keep perishable foods chilled while reviewing the contents.
  • Read dates and storage instructions — Discard unsafe food; do not taste it to assess safety.
  • Wipe spills and clean the shelf — Use the cleaning method suitable for your refrigerator.
  • Separate raw foods from ready-to-eat food — Use leakproof storage below foods that will be eaten without further cooking.
  • Label leftovers with contents and date — Keep their original safe-use limit; a new label does not restart it.
  • Choose suitable food to use or freeze soon — Make portions and note where they are stored.
  • Plan meals and list only missing ingredients — Check fridge, freezer and cupboard; add realistic quantities.

Questions and answers

Do I need new containers?

No. Start with clean, food-safe containers you already have. Use a label or a note for food hidden behind another item. Buy something only after identifying a genuine storage problem it will solve.

Can I judge safety from smell?

Do not use this guide as a spoilage test. Follow the applicable use-by date, storage instructions and local food-safety advice. If safety is uncertain, do not taste the food to decide.

How often should I repeat the reset?

Check the use-soon section before cooking and do a fuller inventory before shopping. This is an editorial routine, not a new food-storage limit. Product instructions still determine safe handling.
